UMass Amherst seismologist Haiying Gao has received an NSF CAREER grant to support her work to model, compare and characterize for the first time five subduction zones across the globe where large earthquakes have occurred. Comparing these five systems should allow her to understand if subduction is a single process, or controlled by local or regional processes, or a combination of both.
