To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Caption A team of researchers from Penn State and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine has identified the mode of action of viperin, a naturally occurring enzyme in humans that is known to have antiviral effects on a wide variety of viruses, including West Nile, hepatitis C, rabies, and HIV. Understanding this naturally occurring compound could allow the development of a new broad-spectrum therapy for a range of viruses. Here, Joyce Jose, assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at Penn State and an author of the new study, describes the effect of the compound on Zika virus.
