Male Mice Are More Affected by the Memory of Pain Than Females (IMAGE)

On Day 1 of the experiment, low levels of heat were delivered to mice who then received an injection that caused them stomach pain for a short period. The following day, in order to look at the role that remembered pain plays in later reactions to pain, mice were placed in either a similarly or a differently shaped container. Researchers found that only the male mice returning to the same environment exhibited a heightened heat pain response when the same level of heat was applied as the day before. The mice who were placed in a new and neutral environment did not react in the same way. The researchers believe that this study offers information that will potentially be helpful for the treatment of chronic pain.
