Researchers, from left, Nien-Pei Tsai, Kwan Young Lee and their colleagues discovered that a gene mutation associated with infantile spasms disrupts the formation of synapses in the hippocampus, a brain structure essential to learning and memory. They also tested a potential drug compound in a mouse model of infantile spasms that reversed some of the negative physiological and behavioral effects.
