The image shows cross sections from four different developmental stages in the early embryo from gastrulation (flat) to the end of neurulation. Unexpectedly, the study revealed that stem cells that have a pluripotent signature, which are visualized in yellow, are found in the entire developing ectoderm until the neural tube closure stage, when they are restricted to the neural crest cells at the top of the neural tube.
