Big Eyes (image)

Caption
Researchers from the Max Delbrück Center Medicine for Molecular Medicine (MDC) have identified a genetic mechanism causing enlarged eyeballs in buphthalmia, a devastating eye disease. Patients afflicted are severely myopic, or nearsighted (Developmental Cell). The eyeball becomes extended from loss of LRP2 receptor proteins (left) in comparison to an eye with intact LRP2 receptor protein (right); histological mouse sections.
