The diagram shows how the protein structure adjusts when it binds to different targets, including regions that become disordered (broken lines). The structures were superimposed and displayed using the molecular graphics program, CHIMERA. Superimposed ribbon structures of N-TIMP-1 extracted from 3D structures of complexes with different MMPs determined by X-ray crystallography, and two structures of the free protein in solution determined by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The structures from the complexes are colored as follows: MMP1c (2jot) pink; MMP3c (1uea), cyan; MMP14c (3ma2), blue; MMP10c (3v96), purple. The free N-TIMP-1 structures were chains 1, 20 and 29 from 1d2b, and are colored light grey.
