University of Iowa biologists have found a protein that appears to control the speed at which female (maternal) and male (paternal) chromosome strands move and pair up. The image on the left shows chromosomes (in blue) aligning and pairing (indicated in red). In the image on the right, the controlling protein has been removed, and less pairing has occurred.
