Imaging through Flames (image) National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Share Print E-Mail Caption NIST researchers demonstrated that laser ranging could "see through flames" to make this image of a plastic skeleton toy. Laser ranging captured the plastic skeleton's complex three-dimensional shape, with depth indicated by false color. The plastic did not melt or deform in the fire.
