The rugged landscape of northern California provided a natural laboratory to investigate the factors influencing forest regeneration after wildfire. This photograph taken just west of Happy Camp California shows areas that burned 20 years earlier. Portions of the landscape were managed while other areas were left to regenerate naturally.
