The Pellecchia lab at UC Riverside is working on an approach in which effective drugs can be obtained by appropriately designing molecules to contain an aryl-fluoro sulfate (the chemical group circled in red) as it can react effectively with the amino acids tyrosine, lysine, or histine that are often present in binding sites of drug targets, as shown in this example. Once the reaction takes place, the drug will be permanently bound to the target, thus effectively inactivating its function. This illustration was produced by Pellecchia using the molecular modeling software Chimera (UCSF).
