新しい研究によれば、インクジェット印刷法に基づく、拡張性のある「ラボオンチップ」技術により、患者の血漿試料から乳癌を90%を超える精度で検出できた。100名の血漿を用いて試験したときに早期腫瘍も転移腫瘍も探り出したこの新しいチップによって、将来、現在の診断法よりも侵襲性の少ない方法で臨床医が新たな癌を検出し、既存の癌をモニタリングできるようになるかもしれない。早期段階で癌を発見することは、臨床転帰を最善にするために重要である。転移してしまった進行腫瘍を撲滅することははるかに困難なためである。しかし、現在の癌検出法には大きな欠点があり、標準的な組織生検は侵襲的で繰り返し行うことができず、X線写真などの画像診断法は腫瘍増殖の重要な変化を捉えることができない。液体生検(単純な血液や血漿の採取により癌を発見する検査)はこのような問題の多くを克服する可能性があるが、何年もの研究にもかかわらず臨床診療に幅広く使用されている液体生検検査はまだない。Peng Zhangらは今回、EV-CLUEチップ(コロイドインクジェット印刷法を用いて作製したデバイス)を用いて液体生検への第一歩を踏み出した。このチップは細胞外小胞(細胞間で分子を輸送する小さな構造)を捕捉してMMP14(腫瘍の進行と転移に関係する酵素)の存在と活性を検出することで機能する。EV-CLUEは対照者と早期乳癌または転移性乳癌患者を問題なく区別でき、最初の30名のグループでは精度が96.7%、2つ目の70名のグループでは精度が92.9%であった。Zhangらは、この印刷技術は堅牢で拡張性があるため、今後、多数の患者を対象とした臨床試験が可能であるとも述べている。
