Federico Bianchi and Runlong Cai, Associate Professor and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki’s Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR), have received prestigious Gesellschaft für Aerosolforschung (GAeF) awards for outstanding aerosol scientific research at the annual European Aerosol Conference.

Associate Professor Federico Bianchi was awarded the 2021 Schmauss Award  of the Association for Aerosol Research for his significant research contributions to atmospheric aerosol science on September 1st. According to the jury, Bianchi’s work has provided new ground-breaking insights into atmospheric new particle formation at the molecular level in locations ranging from the free troposphere to Chinese megacities.

Postdoctoral researcher Runlong Cai receives the GAeF PhD Award for his outstanding doctoral thesis in aerosol science, titled “Development and applications of classification and size distribution measurement for sub-3 nm aerosols”. According to the nominator, Runlong’s thesis substantially contributes to measuring sub-3 nm aerosols and understanding new particle formation in polluted urban environments.

Runlong Cai received the award together with Jan van den Broek, a colleague from ETH Zürich on September 1st 2021 during European Aerosol Conference’s online event.
