Radioactive waste and the scientific and humanitarian problems of its disposal are discussed in this month's edition of Interdisciplinary Science Reviews (ISR). Edited by Professor Jack Harris, this issue brings together papers by leading nuclear scientists, engineers and social scientists to provide a truly interdisciplinary account of the current nuclear waste disposal situation.
Sir Herman Bondi, writing in the foreword for this issue says, "It is very important that when the day comes for governments to take decisions on the vexed topic of nuclear waste, all aspects of it should have been studied thoroughly. I warmly recommend this special issue of ISR to its regular readers and indeed to everybody. To find so much knowledge and experience brought together in one place is a treat. Wide appreciation of what is said here should help to make decision taking in this field a little less difficult ." Professor Jack Harris, editor of Interdisciplinary Science Reviews, says, "There is hardly a scientific discipline which does not at some stage have relevance to the subject of nuclear waste disposal."

2. Interdisciplinary Science
Reviews is one of a
number of journals published by The Institute of Materials. The Institute is the
professional
organisation of more than 19,000 materials scientists and engineers working in
the fields of plastics,
rubber, steel, metals and ceramics.
Professor Jack Harris has been working in the nuclear industry since the mid 1950s. For his work with CEGB on nuclear fuel elements in 1979 he was awarded the Royal Society Esso Gold Medal for Energy Conservation conjointly with Dr V. Eldred. In more recent years he has been elected Fellow of both the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society. Since 1990 he has been a freelance writer, columnist for Materials World and is the editor of Interdisciplinary Science Reviews. He is a member of the Council of British Pugwash.
