KANSAS CITY, May 24, 1999-Leading echinacea researchers and scientists from around the globe will take an in-depth look at the latest scientific, medical and conservation information about one of the world's most popular herbal remedies at the 1999 International Echinacea Symposium, June 3-5 in Kansas City, MO.

The two-and-a-half day symposium is the first of its kind to be held in the United States. It features researchers, healthcare professionals, conservation experts and industry professionals involved with echinacea, its products and medicinal benefits. The symposium, hosted by the American Herbal Products Association, will take place at the Ritz-Carlton in Kansas City.

Echinacea is one of the most popular herbal remedies in the United States: A recent poll found that seven percent of Americans have used it. And it is estimated that consumers are buying about $300 million worth of the herb annually.

Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea and related species), a plant native to the U.S., was the Central Plains Indians' most widely used medicinal plant. The leaf and root have been found to be antibacterial, antiviral, and useful for wound healing. German research has confirmed that ehinacea purpurea can strengthen the body's immune system and help prevent and treat colds and flu.
