EAI's World2WorldO Software Virtually Links Physicians at Five Separate Viewing Stations-Allowing Real-Time Collaborative Analysis of Patient Anatomy
AMES, Iowa-May 3, 1999-Engineering Animation, Inc. (Nasdaq: EAII) today announced that its World2World software will play an integral role in a new telemedicine application developed by NASA researchers. EAI's software will enable medical experts-located in different geographic locations-to simultaneously view and analyze models of patient anatomy in real time. A demonstration of this unique 'Virtual Collaborative Clinic,' will be showcased during a press event on May 4th at the NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, in Sunnyvale, California. The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. Pacific Standard Time.
"Within two days, we had integrated the World2World system with our software, and created a linked version of our data viewer which synchronized, in real time, the manipulation of an object between five viewing stations running under Windows NT and SGI IRIX," said Xander Twombly, senior research scientist at the NASA Ames Center for Bioinformatics. "We have been using World2World intensively over the last month and a half to expand the collaborative functionality of our system, and we are confident that we made the correct decision in choosing EAI."
The demonstration of this application, which has the potential to improve health care in geographically remote areas throughout the world, will link five workstations-three in California, one in New Mexico and one in Ohio-with the NASA site at Moffett Field. Using the collaborative capabilities of EAI's World2WorldO, physician participants can manipulate 3D images of a patient's heart, skull and other body parts for consultation, diagnosis and treatment planning. Physicians at these remote locations will be able to see these procedures-in 3D-as they are performed in real time.
