New Zealand's prime minister addresses environmental risk

Washington, DC (August 31, 1999) - Prime Minister Simon Upton will discuss strategies for managing ecological risk when he delivers the inaugural Robert C. Barnard Environmental Lecture at AAAS on Thursday, September 2. Upton is New Zealand's Minister of the Environment and the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade. His remarks will be delivered at a lecture honoring local lawyer Robert C. Barnard, Esq. for his contributions to environmental and public health law.

Barnard will be an honored guest at the lecture, which is endowed by the law firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton. He has a long history on the Selection Committee of the AAAS Environmental Fellowship Program. Approximately 80 AAAS fellows will attend the event, along with representatives of the Washington environmental policy community.

AAAS offers a number of science policy fellowships that deal with Congress, defense policy, global stewardship, diplomacy, risk policy, environment and technology policy. Each year about 100 scientists and engineers are placed in legislative and executive branch offices through AAAS programs.
