New Jersey chemist re-elected to board of directors of world's largest scientific society

Maureen G. Chan, a polymer chemist formerly with Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, N.J., has been re-elected to the Board of Directors of the world's largest scientific society, the American Chemical Society. Her new three-year term begins Jan. 1, 2000.

A member of the Board of Directors since 1997, Chan has focused on improving employment opportunities and education as well as increasing public affairs and public outreach efforts. She has also supported initiatives to improve access to scientific information.

Before retiring in 1996, Chan held numerous research positions with Bell Laboratories/ Lucent Technologies, including technical manager of the Polymer Chemistry Advanced Applications and Stabilization group. She is the recipient of the Outstanding Woman Scientist Award, sponsored by Metro American Women in Science.

Chan earned her M.S. (1965) from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J., and received her B.S. (1961) from Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia. She resides in Bedminster, N.J.
