LOS ANGELES (Dec. 15, 1999) - The Cedars-Sinai Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute has signed an agreement with Carl Zeiss, Inc., North America, to become that company's exclusive West Coast research center for image-guided surgery, providing Cedars-Sinai patients with new technologies even before they become widely available on the market.

In fact, through this agreement, the ideas and experiences of neurosurgeons at the Institute will actually help shape the next generations of surgical imaging devices.

Keith Black, M.D., director of the Institute and director of the medical center's Comprehensive Brain Tumor Program and the Division of Neurosurgery, said he is pleased that the highly respected Zeiss organization has chosen the Neurosurgical Institute as its West Coast partner. He said he and his colleagues look forward to assisting in the development of technologies that meet the expectations of neurosurgeons worldwide and provide ever-greater hope for their patients.

"We believe this will be a very beneficial relationship," said Dr. Black. "Zeiss and its related companies are committed to developing computer-assisted navigation systems for neurosurgery that integrate the microscope, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging and various other state-of-the-art technologies to improve outcomes in the neurosurgical operating suite."

Founded by Dr. Black in 1997, the Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute treats a variety of intracranial conditions that require precise surgical interventions - from brain tumors and aneurysms to numerous pediatric conditions. The Zeiss companies, begun by Carl Zeiss in 1846, have become an international technology leader in the fields of optics, precision engineering and electronic visualization.
