"Drug Use, HIV and Hepatitis: Bringing It All Together" will unite researchers and practitioners from campuses and communities across the country to address these inter-related and urgent public health issues. The driving force behind this conference, May 7-10, 2000, at the Baltimore Convention Center, is to reduce the incidence of chronic infectious diseases among drug users, to facilitate entry of drug users into drug treatment, and to link them to appropriate medical care.
The conference has the overall goal of advancing the integration of best practices in prevention, outreach, assessment, case management, medical treatment, and monitoring to ensure that people with drug problems, who are at risk for or have contracted chronic infections, will receive timely, coordinated, and comprehensive services. Drug Use, HIV and Hepatitis: Bringing It All Together is designed to provide and produce practical strategies for implementing an integrated approach to prevention, treatment, and policy issues.
More than 1,000 researchers, policy-makers, and front-line workers who are involved in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, TB and other infectious and sexually-transmitted diseases among drug-using populations are expected to attend.
The conference is being sponsored by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) of the National Institutes of Health, and the National Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Center for HIV, Hepatitis, and Addiction Training and Technology of Danya International, Inc., funded by CSAT, is coordinating the conference.
Several other Federal agencies will be involved with the planning of the conference, including the NIH Office of AIDS Research, the Office of National AIDS Policy, and the Health Resources and Services Administration.
