The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and the Multidisciplinary Research and Consultancy Centre at the University of Namibia announce the publication of Population-Development-Environment in Namibia: Background Readings.
This report is part of an IIASA project on Evaluating Alternative Paths for Sustainable Development in Botswana, Mozambique and Namibia, which aims at the development of an interdisciplinary computer model and the evaluation of alternative policy scenarios for the country. The project was funded by the European Commission through the Directorate General for Development.
The text contains fifteen in-depth case studies that showcase various aspects of the interrelationships between population change, the environment and development in Namibia. In addition, the book lays the foundation for development of a scientific model to help scholars assess scenarios and policies regarding sustainable human development in Namibia and in other developing countries.
Literature on Namibia is sparse and generally confined to unpublished reports. This compendium of studies will expand the body of knowledge readily available to scholars exploring issues of population, HIV/AIDS, migration, natural resources, technological development in Namibia and other African countries. The papers included in the text are the result of workshops held at IIASA in 1997 and in 1998, augmented with meetings in Namibia, and close collaboration with the University of Namibia Multidisciplinary Research and Consultancy Centre.
The text was edited in part by Dr. Ben Fuller, head of the Social Sciences Division of the Multidisciplinary Research and Consultancy Center at the University of Namibia. Dr. Fuller, a prolific writer on topics ranging from HIV/AIDS to housing, focuses largely on development issues. The other editor, Isolde Prommer, currently in the Ph.D. program at the University of Agricultural Sciences in Vienna, is a research assistant in the Population Project (POP) at IIASA. She is working on the interactions between agricultural production and HIV/AIDS in Mozambique and is a member of the Young Integrated Assessment Network at the International Centre for Integrated Studies (ICIS) in Maastricht, the Netherlands.
