Second book in key diseases series: optimal primary care of HIV patients focus of new book

The American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine (ACP-ASIM) has released a new title in its Key Disease Series. The book, "HIV," edited by Howard Libman, MD, and Harvey J. Makadon, MD, is designed to support physicians in providing high-quality primary medical care to HIV-infected patients as newer treatments raise practice standards.

The understanding of HIV has continued to evolve as the disease has shifted from a progressive disease with frequent debilitating complications to, for many patients, a treatable chronic medical condition. These continual changes in managing HIV have presented important challenges for practicing physicians.

With contributions by 23 AIDS experts, the book's 310 pages include clinical vignettes, a drug appendix, and color photographs. Its ten chapters include: "Pathogenesis and Natural History," "Primary Care of HIV Disease," "Antiretroviral Therapy," "Prevention of Opportunistic Infections," "Diagnosis and Management of Opportunistic Infections," and "Infection Control and Risk Reduction for Health Care Workers."
