The Sixth Annual American Society of Hematology hosted symposium will enable students to explore the world of biomedical research close up.
500 high school students from the San Francisco area will participate in a hands-on science symposium hosted by the American Society of Hematology. The symposium, the brainchild of Dr. Beverly Torok-Storb at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is designed to provide a close-up view and hands-on experiences to high school students. The symposium will be from 8:15 a.m. until noon on Friday, Dec.1, in Golden Gate Hall at the San Francisco Marriott.
The half-day program includes interactive scientific activities as well as lectures on topics such as stem-cell transplantation, how blood cells function, the truth and consequences of genomic research as well as laboratory techniques. During the hands-on activities each student will:
- isolate and "spool DNA"
- learn the fine art of micro-pipetting and the math behind it
