Book Announcement

American College of Physicians

PHILADELPHIA -- (July 3, 2002) "Osteoporosis -- An Evidence-Based Guide to Prevention and Management" has been published by the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine (ACP-ASIM), the national organization of internal medicine specialists.

Edited by Steven R. Cummings, MD, Felicia Cosman, MD, and Sophie A. Jamal, MD, "Osteoporosis" has been endorsed by the American Geriatrics Society and the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.

The guide includes the latest scientific evidence on osteoporosis and provides essential information on its origins and progress. The three authors and 14 worldwide contributors from departments of epidemiology, bone metabolism, and preventive medicine bring to the book their extensive clinical experience in osteoporosis research, prevention and treatment.

The guide addresses every facet of osteoporosis, a common disease that until recently had been considered an inevitable part of aging. Osteoporosis is typically diagnosed only after a serious complication, such as a fracture. It is now possible, however, to identify high-risk patients. Noninvasive tests can estimate bone mass, and patients at risk can be treated with new, effective drugs to reduce fractures.
