NREL launches fuel research lab in Denver

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) will dedicate a new a research facility in Denver on July 19 that will develop cleaner fuels for trucks and buses - part of a broader DOE effort to find domestically produced alternatives to petroleum and improve the nation's air quality.

DOE's Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy David Garman will join NREL Director Richard Truly and local, state and industry representatives in formally opening the Renewable Fuels and Lubricants Research Laboratory (ReFUEL).

"The ReFUEL facility being launched by NREL will become an important new resource to help meet our national goals for reducing our reliance on foreign energy sources and at the same time improving our environment," Garman said.

"With our new lab in Denver, NREL looks forward to making significant contributions to DOE's heavy truck and renewable fuels programs," Truly said.

Alternative fuel and technologically advanced vehicles will be on display at the event, including a compressed natural gas-electric hybrid bus, a state-of-the-art heavy transport truck and an ethanol-powered race car.

The event will also feature tours of various research components within the ReFUEL facility and overviews of planned research and development projects.

Media are invited to attend. The event begins at 10 a.m. at the ReFUEL facility, 1980 31st St., just west of Brighton Boulevard.

NREL is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory managed by Midwest Research Institute, Battelle and Bechtel.
