Rational approaches to drug discovery for Alzheimer's disease are moving rapidly worldwide. Unfortunately, "prevention" is much more likely to be a successful strategy, rather than trying to re-create a severely damaged, demented brain. Genetic markers such as those studied by Martins and colleagues at the McCusker Alzheimer Foundation, University of Western Australia and Hollywood Private Hospital hold promise for guiding clinical trials: these markers may allow us to winnow down the general population to a more manageable pool of individuals with relatively higher risk for Alzheimer's. In this project, Martins and colleagues developed a set of tools for identifying such enriched populations. This work may impact on future clinical trials of anti-Alzheimer drugs.
