ORLANDO, June 3, 2003 – The University of Central Florida College of Education is recruiting work force professionals with backgrounds in math and science for a new program designed to transition them into teaching.

The Transition to Math and Science Teaching, or T-MAST, program was created through a collaboration of Lockheed Martin, Orange County Public Schools and UCF's College of Education to address a critical need for math and science teachers in middle schools. The Toyota USA Foundation is giving the college $275,000 to begin the program this summer.

Students will go through a short, four-semester fast-track program designed to give them the appropriate education courses to immediately begin teaching hard-science subjects in middle schools throughout Central Florida. Those completing the program will receive a master's degree in mathematics or science education.

"We are excited about the prospect of filling critical shortages for middle school teachers in the subject areas of math and science," said UCF Professor Mike Hynes, coordinator of the T-MAST program. "If we ever hope to prepare more youngsters for careers in engineering, science and related fields, this program is part of the answer."

Hynes said T-MAST students must have established subject matter expertise in math and science through earlier career work. The coursework will provide the knowledge and understanding of proven and promising teaching practices.
