New funding mechanism for melanoma research announced

Grant and Award Announcement

American Association for Cancer Research

The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), the nation's largest and oldest professional society of basic, translational, and clinical cancer research scientists, is now accepting applications for the AACR-William S. Graham Foundation Fellows Grant for Melanoma Research in 2004.

This grant is a unique addition to the growing program of AACR Research Fellowships. The AACR-William S. Graham Foundation Fellows Grant for Melanoma Research will support innovative research by a meritorious young investigator dedicated to pursuing the prevention and cure of melanoma by presenting the Fellow with the research funds to pursue an independent line of investigation within the context of his or her current Fellowship placement. The grant will allow the Fellow to acquire the equipment and supplies needed to pursue a new direction in his or her research program, to develop preliminary data to support a future project, or to investigate a new technique that otherwise would not be possible in the absence of this funding.

The Fellows Grant will provide a one-year grant of at least $30,000 to be used for direct research expenses; indirect costs are not provided. Research proposals are restricted to those basic, translational, clinical, or prevention research proposals with 100 percent applicability to melanoma. Candidates must hold the current status of clinical or postdoctoral fellow or the equivalent and be conducting research at a U.S.-based academic or medical institution. Candidates must be in the third, fourth or fifth year of their fellowship status and may not hold a full-time faculty appointment at any level at the start of the grant term (July 1, 2004). Employees or subcontractors of a national government or private industry are not eligible for these awards. In addition to the award amount noted above, the recipient will receive registration and support for travel expenses to attend the 2004 AACR Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida and to accept the award.

The application deadline is Wednesday, October 15, 2003. Details about the Fellows Grant and the nomination process are located on the AACR Website at http://www.aacr.org.

Through this new source of funding, the AACR and The William S. Graham Foundation for Melanoma Research seek to encourage the mentorship of senior scientists, to support talented early-careers scientists in making the transition to junior faculty status, and to promote the pursuit of innovative and promising melanoma research. The AACR is pleased to co-sponsor this exciting new program with the William S. Graham Foundation for Melanoma Research, Inc. "The Billy Foundation," as it is fondly called, raises funds in support of research designated to finding the cure for the later stages of the deadly disease, malignant melanoma; to educate the public regarding the cause and prevention; and through specific public awareness programs, to assist in the early detection of this insidious, potentially lethal cancer.

Founded in 1907, the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) is a professional society of more than 20,000 laboratory and clinical scientists engaged in cancer research in the United States and more than 60 other countries. AACR's mission is to accelerate the prevention and cure of cancer through research, education, communication and advocacy. Its principal activities include the publication of five major peer-reviewed scientific journals (Cancer Research; Clinical Cancer Research; Molecular Cancer Therapeutics; Molecular Cancer Research; and Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention). AACR's Annual Meeting attracts more than 16,000 participants who share new and significant discoveries in the cancer field, and the AACR's specialty meetings throughout the year focus on all the important areas of basic, translational and clinical cancer research.
