Greer began studying chemistry at Furman University in Greenville, S.C., and has focused on encouraging women in chemistry throughout her career: Her Greer Report raised awareness about the underrepresentation of women in science and engineering; and she chaired the Mills College Women in Science Summit in 1994. Greer has supervised 14 Ph.D. dissertations — more than half of those degrees were awarded to women — and was one of very few women to serve as chair of the University of Maryland Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
Greer was profiled in a January 5 article in Chemical & Engineering News. It is available at http://www.cen-online.org/awards/8201awards.html
