University of Maryland professor honored at chemists' luncheon

Grant and Award Announcement

American Chemical Society

ANAHEIM, Calif., — Sandra Greer, Ph.D., a Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Maryland, College Park, and the 2004 Francis P. Garvan-John M. Olin Medal winner, will address the Women Chemists Committee during a luncheon and reception held at the 227th national meeting of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society. Greer, an internationally known scholar in the areas of experimental thermodynamics of fluids, fluid mixtures, and phase transitions, is being recognized for "distinguished service to chemistry by a woman chemist."

Greer began studying chemistry at Furman University in Greenville, S.C., and has focused on encouraging women in chemistry throughout her career: Her Greer Report raised awareness about the underrepresentation of women in science and engineering; and she chaired the Mills College Women in Science Summit in 1994. Greer has supervised 14 Ph.D. dissertations — more than half of those degrees were awarded to women — and was one of very few women to serve as chair of the University of Maryland Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Greer was profiled in a January 5 article in Chemical & Engineering News. It is available at http://www.cen-online.org/awards/8201awards.html
