Dr. Irwin Goldstein, Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Sexual Medicine and a leading expert in the field, said "the (editorial) board is primed for the task of making this the major journal for the study of sexual medicine, representing basic science research and the clinical applications of evaluation and treatment of sexual health issues." Dr. Goldstein, his editorial team, and the entire editorial board formerly managed the International Journal of Impotence Research, but resigned when ISSIR and its regional affiliate societies had differences with the journal's publisher.
"We will continue the fine publication of quality scientific research started by Drs. William Furlow and Gorm Wagner in 1989," said Dr. Jacques Buvat, President of ISSIR. The society has selected Blackwell Publishing as its partner in the launch and management of The Journal of Sexual Medicine. "Blackwell provides superior publishing capabilities and is better suited to ensure our success as a top-ranked journal in sexual medicine," noted Dr. Buvat.

The Journal of Sexual Medicine is the official publication of the International Society for Sexual and Impotence Research (ISSIR) and its regional affiliate societies: African Society for Sexual and Impotence Research (ASSIR), Asia Pacific Society for Sexual and Impotence Research (APSSIR), European Society for Sexual Medicine (ESSM), Latin American Society for the Study of Impotency and Sexuality (SLAIS), and Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA).
