The Council for the Advancement of Science Writing, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of science reporting, is offering traveling fellowships of up to $1,000 each to cover the cost of attending the 2004 New Horizons in Science Briefing for Journalists, hosted by the University of Arkansas.

The annual conference brings together top-rank scientists and leading science reporters for an in-depth look at seminal developments in science, medicine and technology that are likely to make news in the coming months. Fellows will also have the opportunity to participate in a half-day science writers workshop sponsored by the National Association of Science Writers that precedes the briefing.

The fellowships are intended primarily for reporters from publications and radio and TV news outlets that do not field full-time science correspondents or do not ordinarily cover major science meetings. They offer a unique introduction to science reporting that will prove of long-term benefit to the individual and the profession. Freelancers with a demonstrated interest in science writing are also eligible.

Transportation, hotel and meal costs are covered. CASW will, upon request, assign a veteran science writer to serve as personal mentor to the fellowship recipient.

For program details, visit the CASW Website -- www.casw.org -- and click on New Horizons 2004.

The New Horizons Traveling Fellowship Program is underwritten by a grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.

There is no formal application. To apply, submit four collated sets containing each of the following: 1) a brief (no more than 500-word) expression of interest; 2) a resume (with home and office telephone numbers); 3) no more than 3 clips or broadcast transcripts (on any topic); 4) a nominating letter from a senior editor, news director or producer.

Deadline for applications is September 24, 2004
