The Research University of the Year was announced today by Research Inforsource Inc. when it released its annual Top 50 Research Universities report. The rankings are based on total sponsored research income, faculty and graduate student research intensity, and the number of publications in leading journals. McMaster was ranked in the medical/doctoral category.
For the second year in a row, McMaster placed seventh in the country in overall research income, bringing in more than $218 million. The University was ranked third in research intensity based on research income per full-time faculty position. The rankings are based on Statistics Canada data.
Mamdouh Shoukri, vice-president of research and international affairs, says this designation confirms that the University's approach to research is working. "The measurement used was based on both inputs and outputs, which proves we're not only attracting the financial support, but we're also producing quality research results. The momentum our research enterprise has gained is astounding. In the last 10 years, we've tripled our income, but more than that, we've recruited and retained some of the world's best researchers."
McMaster president Peter George echoes Shoukri's comments, adding he's delighted but not entirely surprised that McMaster was named the top Research University. "Everyone who is connected with research at McMaster deserves credit for the University earning this designation. But our research teams aren't the only winners. A research-intensive university such as McMaster links research and education. It means our students have more opportunities not only to learn from the very best, but to learn how to apply research skills and problem solving to their studies and their future careers."
