Stephen T. Boswell is the President and CEO of Boswell Engineering. Under his direction, the firm has provided the design and construction engineering for numerous projects, such as the $190 Million Secaucus Interchange on the NJ Turnpike, the $600 Million Southern New Jersey Light Rail Transit System, the $200 Million Reconfiguration of I-87/I-287 from the Tappan Zee Bridge to the Saw Mill Parkway and the underwater inspection and fathometric surveying for the New York State Department of Transportation of thousands of bridges and waterfront facilities.
Dr. Boswell has authored numerous environmental impact statements and wetlands reports and has been qualified as an expert in many jurisdictions. Since 1993, he has served as an advisory board member to Stevens' own pioneering Center for Environmental Systems.
He was appointed by the Governor of New Jersey and confirmed by the State Senate to the New Jersey Council on Environmental Quality; he was also appointed by the Governor of New Jersey as a Member of the Regional Intergovernmental Transportation Coordinating Study Commission.
His many public-spirited endeavors include his extensive work as a member of the Board of Governors of the Hackensack University Medical Center. He has donated engineering services for the construction of many municipal projects, as well as to the Buehler Challenger and Science Center Foundation, and is currently donating engineering services for the expansion of facilities at Stevens.
His numerous awards and citations include the American Council of Engineering Companies' Community Service Award; the American Society of Civil Engineers' North Jersey Branch Service to the People Award; and the New Jersey Society of Professional Engineers' Engineer of the Year Award.
His professional affiliations include the American Council of Engineering Companies, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, and the Water Environment Federation.
Boswell holds a doctorate in Environmental Engineering from Stevens, a master's degree in Biological Sciences from William Paterson University, and a double master's degree in Civil Engineering from Stevens. He is a registered Professional Engineer in 26 of the 50 states.
He resides in Wyckoff, N.J., with his wife Karen and their daughter, Kristen, who is pursuing a degree in civil engineering.

The Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. Entrepreneur Award is given to an individual who embodies the classic American spirit. The award recognizes a person with a dream and the tenacity to overcome obstacles in the pursuit of his or her objective; one who has achieved recognized leadership by virtue of his or her raw talent and determination; and who is an achiever willing to take risks and assume responsibilities.
Furthermore, the award applauds the innovator whose accomplishments have distinguished him or her in a particular field. Stevens Institute of Technology has encouraged this entrepreneurial spirit in its students since its founding in 1870. Indeed, the very founders of the university, the Stevens family, were noted entrepreneurs in their own time. Through the legacy they created, their classic American spirit has been carried forward to the greater benefit of society.
This special award is named for an extraordinary friend of Stevens. Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. graduated with the Stevens Class of 1936 and spent the next 60 years supporting his alma mater as a loyal alumnus, trustee, and ultimately Chairman of the Board. An entrepreneur himself, Mr. Schaefer established numerous manufacturing businesses throughout New Jersey and became a highly respected businessman and philanthropist.
Carrying forward his legacy and the tradition of an innovative university, Stevens Institute of Technology plans from time to time to present The Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. Entrepreneur Award to distinguished entrepreneurs drawn from the community at large.
