John Piwinski, Ph.D., group vice president, Chemical Research, Schering-Plough Research Institute, will be recognized by Jim Burke, chair of the ACS Board of Directors, during a ceremony March 14 in San Diego at the Society’s 229th national meeting. ACS is the world’s largest scientific society.
ACS honored Schering-Plough for its unique contribution to the Scholars Program. For each of the past two years, Schering-Plough has provided grants of $50,000 to bring 20 freshmen into the Scholars Program with $2,500 scholarships. “Schering-Plough is a proud sponsor of the ACS Scholars Program. We are committed to supporting young chemists as chemistry is one of the foundations of pharmaceutical research and development,” said Cecil Pickett, Ph.D., senior vice president, Schering-Plough Corporation and president, Schering-Plough Research Institute.
ACS is celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Scholars program at the San Diego meeting and at its fall national meeting in Washington, D.C. With the contributions of corporations such as Schering-Plough, in addition to the Society’s funding, the ACS has awarded $8 million in scholarships to almost 1,500 talented minority students with financial need.
The Scholars Program is available for qualified applicants who want to enter the fields of chemistry, biochemistry or chemical engineering, and for students seeking a two-year degree in chemical technology.
