Harold Mooney, Professor of Environmental Biology at Stanford University is one of three Heads of Faculty for ecology. He warmly welcomes the expansion of the service to include ecological research:
"Faculty of 1000 Biology is a really wonderful tool to keep up with the major advances in one's discipline, guided by experts in the field. This is the answer to keeping up with the escalating abundance of new scientific information and offers an extraordinary insight into those publications that have the potential to impact significantly the development of ecology."
Ilkka Hanski and Jane Lubchenco join Professor Mooney as Heads of Faculty for ecology. Ilkka Hanski is Professor, Department of Ecology and Systematics at the University of Helsinki in Finland, while Jane Lubchenco is Valley Professor of Marine Biology and Distinguished Professor of Zoology at Oregon State University. These respected leaders in the field have helped recruit over 150 experts to act as Section Heads and Faculty Members for the ecology faculty. A full list of the researchers involved in the faculty is available on the Faculty of 1000 Biology website at http://www.facultyof1000.com/about/members/8032
The new faculty includes 11 sections: Behavioural ecology; Community ecology & biodiversity; Conservation & restoration ecology; Ecosystem ecology; Evolutionary ecology; Global change ecology; Marine & freshwater ecology; Physiological ecology; Population ecology; Spatial & landscape ecology; Theoretical ecology.
The Faculty of 1000 Biology ecology faculty not only evaluates articles in ecology journals, but also provides evaluations on relevant articles published in general science journals, and in journals aimed at other specialties. Ecologists and conservation biologists will be able to quickly and easily identify important articles of relevance to them in a range of journals, and read evaluations of the articles by experts in the field.
