His paper* displays a method to decrease the problem of laminar flow in microchannels without adding any moving parts into the channels or increasing the system volume. The ability to change the laminar flow profile will hopefully become an important tool in microreactor technology. Microreactors in various designs have been applied in miniaturized systems for protein identification, ELISA systems, hydrolysis of cellulose and in a microfluidic system for monitoring of living yeast cells.
The physicist from the Lund University, Sweden, is presently working at the Kitamori Labs of Science and Technology at Kanagawa, Japan. Bengtsson will receive a prize of 1,000 Euros, sponsored by Springer. In addition, the winning paper will receive special prominence on an ABC cover and be available free on springeronline.com.

The Best Paper Award was created with the aim of encouraging exceptional young scientists in establishing their research careers. The award is presented annually to a scientist up to 40 years of age who is the lead author of a paper published in ABC during the calendar year. All research papers submitted that fit the award criteria are considered. Selection criteria include, for example, that these papers receive two excellent reviews during the peer review process.
Martin Bengtsson was born on April 27, 1972 in Uppsala, Sweden. He received his Master of Science degree in Engineering Physics at Lund Institute of Technology, Lund University, in 1998. The same year he began his PhD studies and in 2004 he finished his PhD thesis "Porous Silicon Microbioreactors - Applications and Techology".
