National Academies advisory: High-performance structural fibers

Carbon and organic fibers have been used since the 1970s for many industrial and military applications, including systems to protect soldiers and materials used in aircraft and spacecraft. HIGH-PERFORMANCE STRUCTURAL FIBERS FOR ADVANCED POLYMER MATRIX COMPOSITES, new from the National Academies' National Research Council, assesses the status of the carbon and fiber industries, identifies market trends, and suggests how the U.S. Department of Defense could take advantage of new manufacturing innovations.
