WILMINGTON, Del., May 5, 2005 – Dr. Robert W. Rickard, science director for the DuPont Haskell Laboratory for Health and Environmental Sciences in Newark, Del., today was named DuPont Distinguished Scientist, the highest honor accorded by DuPont to a technical professional. Rickard is only the fifth scientist to receive this title.
Created in 1992, DuPont Distinguished Scientist recognition is reserved for those scientists who have contributed significantly to DuPont's advancement and global reputation in a scientific discipline. The designation recognizes an individual's scientific contributions to more than one business sector and internal and external recognition of the individual as a role model and a global expert in his or her scientific area.
"Bobby is one of the world's most respected scientists for his expertise on the health and environmental effects of new and existing chemicals," said DuPont Chief Science & Technology Officer Thomas M. Connelly, Jr. "His efforts to strengthen DuPont policies, standards and global strategy for toxicology and environmental sciences are a clear demonstration of putting our science to work to provide important perspectives on the value of sustainable and responsible science."
Rickard, 52, has over 25 years of experience in various research and management positions at the world-renowned Haskell Laboratory with emphasis on biochemical toxicology, chemical carcinogenesis and the safety assessment of biopersistent chemicals in the environment. He received his Ph.D. in Toxicology from the University of Kentucky. He has been certified as a Diplomat of the American Board of Toxicology since 1983 and is a member of the Society of Toxicology. Rickard has published in several well-known toxicological journals including Fundamentals of Applied Toxicology and the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health.
He currently co-chairs the American Chemistry Council's Strategic Science Team for Long-Range Research Initiatives and serves on the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of CIIT Centers for Health Research, a non-profit research organization created in 1974 to develop a better scientific understanding of how environmental chemicals can have an impact on human health. Rickard also serves on the Executive Committee and Board of Trustees of the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) – Health and Environmental Science Institute.
Past DuPont Distinguished Scientists are: Howard W. Jacobson in 1992, an expert in fine particle synthesis and coating; Vincent Witterholt in 1994 for his work in agricultural chemistry; V.N. Mallikarjuna Rao in 1995 for advancing DuPont technologies in polymers, agrichemicals and fluorochemicals, including chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) alternatives; and Y.K. Lee of DuPont Singapore in 1997 for his work in polymers for durable automotive paints.
