Since its inception in 2001, the ARVO Foundation has existed to ensure continuing support for original and innovative vision research that fosters collaboration between clinicians and basic scientists. It complements ARVO's mission of furthering global scientific vision research for prevention and cure of eye disease through science and communication. The name change was implemented to better reflect The Foundation's mission to assure the future of vision research.
"We hope this name change will give a better understanding of our mission - to advance eye and vision research around the globe," said Foundation Chairman John E. Dowling, PhD.
Founded in 2002, The ARVO Foundation for Eye Research provides continuing education and support for original and innovative vision research, particularly with translational impact fostering collaboration between clinicians and basic scientists. The Foundation also supports training for new vision research scientists, including those in developing countries.
Funding for the Foundation began as a tribute to one or more individuals who made significant contributions to eye and vision research. Nearly 100 Foundation leaders, volunteers, and donors (individuals, groups, foundations, and corporations) have made substantial multi-year commitments with unrestricted, restricted, or deferred components, raising over $1.6 million dollars for vision research.
