Mayo Clinic

ROCHESTER, Minn. -- Mayo Clinic Tobacco Quitline was recently awarded a two-year contract by the Minnesota Partnership for Action Against Tobacco (MPAAT) to provide tobacco treatment services available through its QUITPLAN Helpline for Minnesotans, effective Dec. 15, 2005. The Helpline is one of several QUITPLAN stop-smoking services. Since the Helpline was established in 2001, more than 39,000 Minnesotans have called for support.

"We are pleased to be collaborating with Mayo Clinic, whose Nicotine Dependence Center has been a leader in tobacco cessation since 1988," said Michael Vekich, MPAAT board chair. "We know from experience that people who seek help from stop-smoking services are seven times more likely to be successful than those who try to stop using tobacco on their own. Mayo Clinic's expertise will allow us to continue to provide the best stop-smoking services available to Minnesotans who want to quit tobacco use."

Based in Rochester, Mayo Clinic Tobacco Quitline receives clinical oversight, training, research and consultative support from the staff of the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center (NDC), a leader in the treatment of nicotine addiction. For more information about the NDC, visit www.mayoclinic.org/stop-smoking.

Mayo Clinic Tobacco Quitline is available to 14 million people nationwide through health plans, corporations and state quit lines, targeting cigarette, pipe and cigar smokers, as well as smokeless tobacco users. Mayo Clinic Tobacco Quitline is administered by MMSI, a Mayo health company.

"Telephone-based services are a convenient, confidential and effective means to access tobacco-cessation assistance," said William Litchy, M.D., MMSI medical director. "Mayo Clinic Tobacco Quitline is a successful, professional program for state residents who are thinking about quitting tobacco or who are ready to stop. Our affiliation with the NDC allows us to continue to develop effective protocols and deliver the newest, most reliable tobacco treatment services to our callers."

In addition to Mayo Clinic Tobacco Quitline, MMSI offers a comprehensive portfolio of health and wellness programs, including the Ask Mayo Clinic 24-hour nurse line and Mayo Clinic Advisor programs for pregnancy, disease management and lifestyle coaching. MMSI also provides health benefit management services, making it a one-stop service for health care benefit programs. MPAAT is an independent, nonprofit organization that improves the health of Minnesotans by reducing the harm caused by tobacco. MPAAT serves Minnesota through its grant-making program, QUITPLAN stop-smoking services and statewide outreach activities. It is funded with 3 percent of the state's 1998 tobacco settlement.
