Dr. John G. Meechan, Senior Lecturer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the United Kingdom, has been named the 2006 recipient of the Pharmacology, Therapeutics, & Toxicology Research Award, presented today during the Opening Ceremonies of the 84th General Session of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), convening at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre. The award, supported by Wyeth Consumer Healthcare, is one of 15 Distinguished Scientist Awards conferred annually by the IADR.

Dr. Meechan's research interests have focused on the topic of local anesthesia and pain control in dentistry. His work has been recognized by the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. In addition to and as an expansion of his work on local anesthesia, he has been concentrating his publications in the area of the medically compromised patient. This has led to a series of well-received articles published in the British Dental Journal on the medically compromised patient and the implications for dental care management.

The IADR Pharmacology, Therapeutics, & Toxicology Research Award consists of a cash prize and a plaque.
