Boulder, CO -- Dr. Richard A. Kerr, Senior Writer at Science, is recipient of the 2006 Geological Society of America Public Service Award. The award will be given at the GSA Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, PA, at the Presidential Address and Awards Ceremony on Saturday, 21 October 2006.

Kerr joined the staff of Science, published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, in 1977. He holds a B.A. degree in chemistry from the College of Wooster and a Ph.D. in chemical oceanography from the University of Rhode Island.

The GSA Public Service Award was established in 1998 in honor of Eugene and Carolyn Shoemaker. It is awarded to individuals who have significantly enhanced public understanding of the earth sciences.

Kerr has written more than 1200 science-news articles over a career spanning nearly 30 years. "Dick's articles in Science are a delight to read," said Rob Van der Voo, Frank H.T. "They are always interesting, novel, and timely, whether breaking ground on an emerging geoscience topic or providing in-depth, comprehensive analysis of a topic over time."
