HOBOKEN, N.J. -- On Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, Stevens Institute of Technology will formally welcome the Class of 2010 in its traditional Convocation Ceremony, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the Canavan Arena, located in the Schaefer Athletic Center on the Hoboken campus.
In keeping with years past, the Stevens community will recognize several illustrious faculty members with the conferral of honorary degrees in engineering, which will be presented by Stevens' President Harold J. Raveché.
This year's honors will go to Stevens Computer Science professors Susanne Wetzel and Rebecca Wright, who have developed a new undergraduate degree program in cybersecurity with funding from the National Science Foundation. The incoming class of 2010 has six freshmen joining this program; one sophomore has switched into the program as well. Several of the incoming freshmen reported that they applied to Stevens specifically because of their interest in the new cybersecurity degree.
"This program will build Stevens' capacity in information assurance and computer security education," said Dr. Stephen Bloom, director of the Department of Computer Science. "The program is structured to provide students with security expertise within the context of a broad education, preparing them thoroughly for careers as information assurance and computer security professionals. Stevens is one of the few universities worldwide that offer such a cybersecurity degree program at the undergraduate level."
A cornerstone of the program is a hands-on cybersecurity lab course that students take in their senior year. The cybersecurity lab is currently being designed and built in the new Lawrence T. Babbio, Jr. Center for Technology Management, with equipment grants from Cisco and SUN Microsystems, as well as additional funding from the National Science Foundation.
Also speaking at the ceremonies will be science writer John Horgan, director of Stevens' Center for Science Writings, and Acting Vice President for Development and External Affairs Marjorie Everitt, who will welcome the Class of 2010 with remarks that stress their place at the head of a long line of Stevens students and alumni who have benefited from a Stevens education and helped to build the Institute during its 136 years of history.
