As part of the Opening Ceremonies of its 85th General Session & Exhibition, convening today at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), along with its largest Division, the American Association for Dental Research (AADR), will present numerous prestigious awards and fellowships. Details follow:
IADR Distinguished Service Award
Presented to Robert "Skip" Collins (University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA), this prestigious award was established by the IADR Board of Directors for a member who has not served as an IADR Officer but who has performed outstanding service to the Association or distinguished service over a period of time. Dr. Collins served the IADR for 11 years as Deputy Executive Director, and as Interim Executive Director. The award, supported by the J. Morita Corporation, consists of a plaque and travel expenses to the IADR General Session in New Orleans. This is the 10th year the award has been presented.
IADR Honorary Membership
The three most recent living IADR Past Presidents may select an Honorary Member who has made significant contributions to and/or supports dental research. This year, Honorary Membership is bestowed on Jiri F. Mestecky, University of Alabama, Birmingham (USA). Dr. Mestecky has made numerous contributions of high quality to oral and dental research. He is a mucosal immunologist who discovered the J chain, founded the international Society for Mucosal Immunology, and was the first to show in humans that the oral cavity was part of the mucosal immune system by demonstrating that ingestion of antigen (Strep. mutans) led to antibodies in saliva. This award recognizes not only his numerous scientific contributions to, but also his support of, oral and dental research, illustrated by his Departmental leadership at the University of Alabama, which has led to the mentorship of numerous dental scientists who have, in their turn, produced high-quality science that has made an enormous impact on dental research.
IADR Toshio Nakao Fellowship
Presented to Abiodun Arigbede (University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria), this Fellowship was established to allow a young investigator to obtain training and experience in dental materials science at a center of excellence. The bi-annual Fellowship in the amount of up to $15,000 is supported by GC Corporation.
E.W. Borrow Memorial Award
Presented to Alberto Villa (University of Chile), this award, established by the Borrow Foundation, recognizes and stimulates research in oral health prevention for children, with a priority for caries prevention using fluoride in different formats. This is the 16th year of the Borrow Award, which consists of a cash prize and a plaque.
The IADR David B. Scott Fellowship
Presented to Amer Muhammad Hussain (University of Alberta, representing the Canadian Division), this Fellowship is supported by the proceeds of an endowment created by the late Mrs. Nancy M. Scott in honor of her husband, David B. Scott, a Past President of the IADR. The Fellowship consists of a cash prize.
The IADR John A. Gray Fellowship
Presented to Esra Botsali (University of Selcuk, Turkey), representing the Continental European Division, this bi-annual Fellowship rotates alphabetically through the IADR Divisions. It is funded by donations from members and sponsors in tribute to John A. Gray, past Executive Director of the IADR.
IADR/Lion Dental Research Awards for Junior Investigators
This award, generously supported by the Lion Corporation (Japan), is intended to support improvements in oral health sciences through the stimulation of junior investigators by: (1) recognition of outstanding and innovative research in basic dental science for the improvement of public dental health; and (2) recognition of applied research achievements for the improvement and development of oral care products for the prevention of oral diseases. The 2007 Award-winners are: representing the Behavioral Sciences & Health Services Research Group, Gao Xiaoli (National University of Singapore); and, representing the Cariology Research Group, Daniel Moreinos (Hebrew University, Israel).
The IADR/Colgate Research in Prevention Travel Awards
Established by the IADR, and generously supported by the Colgate-Palmolive Company, to enable young investigators presenting original research in the area of oral disease prevention to travel to the IADR General Session, this award is presented to: Anita Bhavnani (Case Western Reserve University, USA), Francesco D’Aiuto (UCL Eastman Dental Institute, United Kingdom), Anshula Deshpande (Municipal College of Dental Sciences, India), Michiko Makino (Kyushu Dental College, Japan), Xiuli Sun (Boston University, USA), and Sergio Uribe (University of Valparaiso, Chile). Each recipient receives US$2,000 and a plaque.
The IADR/Unilever Division Travel Awards
These awards were established to encourage outstanding young dental scientists to carry out research, attend the annual IADR General Session, and compete in the IADR/Unilever Hatton Awards Competition. The Travel Awards are generously funded through Unilever Oral Care Division. In 2007, 45 persons from 17 Divisions/Sections/Federations received funding for travel to the IADR’s 85th General Session in New Orleans: (Argentina) R.F. Aromando and C.B. The remaining nine winners will be those selected at New Orleans as winners of the AADR/McNEIL-PPC, INC. Hatton Competition.

IADR/AADR William J. Gies Awards
This award, for the best paper published in the Journal of Dental Research, is presented in three categories: Biological, Biomaterials & Bioengineering, and Clinical. The award, named for William J. Gies, founder of the Journal of Dental Research, is supported by the Gies quasi-endowment fund and the J. Morita Corporation. Nominations may be made by any person, and the papers to be chosen must describe work which has very significantly advanced knowledge in some aspect of dental research. Papers eligible for consideration are those published during the 12-month period (July-June) immediately preceding the IADR General Session. The award consists of a cash prize and a plaque. The Gies Award is open to anyone who publishes in the Journal of Dental Research, the official publication of the IADR/AADR.
The award in the Biological category is presented to B. Hu, F. Unda, S. Bopp-Kuchler, L. Jimenez, X.J. Wang, Y. Haikel, S.L. Wang, and H. Lesot, for "Bone Marrow Cells Can Give Rise to Ameloblast-like Cells" (J Dent Res 85:416-421, May, 2006).
The award in the Biomaterials & Bioengineering category is presented to D. Kaigler, P.H. Krebsbach, Z. Wang, E.R. West, K. Horger, and D.J. Mooney, for "Transplanted Endothelial Cells Enhance Orthotopic Bone Regeneration" (J Dent Res 85:518-522, June, 2006).
The award in the Clinical category is presented to Adriana Modesto, Lina Maria Moreno, Katy Krahn, Sam King, and Andrew C. Lidral, for "MSX1 and Orofacial Clefting with and without Tooth Agenesis" (J Dent Res 85:542-546, June, 2006).
IADR/AADR Journal of Dental Research "Cover of the Year, 2006"
This recognition is presented annually for the cover image that enhances the impact of the article, and is both scientifically novel and aesthetically pleasing. The 2006 award is presented to B. Hu, F. Unda, S. Bopp-Kuchler, L. Jimenez, X.J. Wang, Y. Haikel, S.L. Wang, and H. Lesot, for "Bone Marrow Cells Can Give Rise to Ameloblast-like Cells" (J Dent Res 85:416-421, May, 2006). This is the second year of this award.
Olav Alvares (University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, USA) will be recognized for exemplary service as Editor of Critical Reviews in Oral Biology & Medicine (CROBM) (1990-2006). Content from CROBM is now featured in the monthly issues of the Journal of Dental Research. Dr. Alvares was the only editor in the independent history of CROBM.
AADR Bloc Travel Grant Winners - The American Association for Dental Research received a Bloc Travel Grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) to support travel for US dental students to present their research at the IADR General Session in New Orleans. AADR Honorary Membership
This is bestowed upon James Bramson, Executive Director, American Dental Association (Chicago, IL, USA). Dr. Bramson has been a tireless supporter of dental research as the foundation of the profession. From NIH re-authorization to NIDCR appropriations, to evidence-based dentistry, to promoting dental research breakthroughs to the practicing community, Dr. Bramson has been a strong ally of the AADR.
AADR Jack Hein Public Service Award
Presented to Dushanka Kleinman (University of Maryland, USA), this award honors an individual who has given exemplary service in the area of public affairs by consistently promoting the interests and activities of oral health research to a wide constituency. The award is supported by the AADR and consists of a plaque. Previous recipients of the Award are Jack W. Hein (1996), Gertrude Quigley (1997), Christopher Squier (1998), Jay Gershen (1999), Anthony Picozzi (2000), John Crawford (2001), Michael Barnett (2002), Judith Sherman (2003), Michael Alfano (2004), Linda Niessen (2005), and Robert (Skip) Collins (2006).
AADR William B. Clark Fellowship in Clinical Research
This award is presented to Maria del Pilar Valderrama (University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, USA). The award, sponsored by Crest Oral-B, P&G Professional Oral Health, is in memory of William B. Clark, the late Professor of Oral Biology and Director of the Periodontal Research Center at the University of Florida.
AADR Neal W. Chilton Fellowship in Clinical Research
This new Fellowship, sponsored by the Task Force on Design and Analysis in Dental and Oral Research, has been established in memory of Neal W. Chilton, the late Executive Director of the Task Force on Design and Analysis in Dental and Oral Research, a clinician and statistician who made major contributions to the advancement of clinical research in dentistry. The 2007 presentation is made to Kalu Ogbureke (Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, USA)..
National Student Research Group Mentor Award
This award is presented to Janet M. Guthmiller (University of Iowa, Iowa City, USA), with sincere appreciation for dedication and commitment to mentoring and inspiring the next generation of researchers.
