First texts philosopher John Locke now available digitally

Book Announcement

Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research

Within the framework of the Digital Locke Project a text critical edition has been made of the works of the British philosopher John Locke (1632-1704). Locke is one of the greatest thinkers of the early modern period. The first texts are now available online. The entire edition will be made available via the Internet as well as being published in a printed form. The Digital Locke Project is being funded by NWO and its aim is to produce a digital version of the works of John Locke.

The online edition presents the text in two versions, the diplomatic text and the normalised version of the text. In the diplomatic text all of the differences with other versions of the same text are shown, such as omissions and additions. An explanatory note from the researchers can also be given in the text. In the normalised version the text is 'clean' and wherever possible comments are given in the footnotes. The user can select a text and click through it section by section. By publishing the diplomatic text and the normalised text in a single edition, it is very easy to make a choice between both versions, to switch between the two and to compare them.

Search engine

A major advantage of a digital online edition is the searchability of the text. An extensive search machine has been developed for the project. With this it is not only possible to search for words in the entire text but also for omissions, additions or annotations.

His ideas about politics and the philosophy of language have had a profound influence on the philosophical debate and still exert an influence today. The Digital Locke Project is being carried out by Paul Schuurman (Erasmus University Rotterdam), G.A.J. Rogers (Keele University, U.K.), Ivo Geradts (TAT Zetwerk), Caspar Treijtel and Renze Brandsma (Digital Production Centre, University Library of the Universiteit van Amsterdam). NWO is one of the financiers of the project.
