Grant and Award Announcement

Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science

NORTH CHICAGO, ILL. (March 14, 2007) -- The Chicago Medical School (CMS) of Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFUMS) recently received the prestigious Richard Goodman Strategic Planning Award for 2006-2007, from the Association for Strategic Planning (ASP), in the “Education/Government/Not-for-Profit” category, the first ever Medical School to do so. Competition for this major national award was keen, not just relative to other submissions, but more importantly to the absolute standard set by the late Dr. Richard Goodman, an expert in organization strategy & innovation and professor of management at UCLA Anderson School of Management for whom the award is named. This award recognizes distinction in the practice of strategy, and builds on the broader purpose of ASP to enable individuals and organizations to succeed through strategic thinking, planning and action. The purpose of the award is to: 1) foster continuing excellence in strategic planning; 2) stimulate innovation in the strategic planning process; and 3) honor organizations at the leading edge of strategic practice.

Each submission was judged on four major criteria. The committee stated that CMS strategic planning tools nicely blended attributes of the four categories of criteria. Of particular note was the utilization of discussion groups in the formation of strategy through the University’s D2L online learning platform. ASP also noted CMS’s accomplishments in the area of plan assessment, stating, “We felt that by the supporting exhibits you sent that you actually are doing what you intend to do.”

“We are extremely gratified to have been selected!” commented Dr. Arthur J. Ross, III, Dean, Chicago Medical School. “Terrianne Reynolds (Director of Operations at CMS) deserves a tremendous amount of credit for her work in assembling the many required facets of our application.”

Dr. K. Michael A. Welch, President of the University, stated that “All actions of the University and its schools are strategically driven as RFUMS strives to achieve, maintain and enhance its academic goals. To receive the recognition that we have achieved this standard of excellence in the strategic planning process itself is a confirming honor.”
