Boulder, CO – Two geoscientists and a GSA staff member will receive the Geological Society of America Distinguished Service Award for 2007. They are: Nancy L. Carlson, Geological Society of America; Yildirim Dilek, Miami University; and Robert C. Thomas, University of Montana Western. The awards will be given at the GSA Annual Meeting in Denver, CO, at the Presidential Address and Awards Ceremony on Saturday, 27 October 2007.
The Geological Society of America Distinguished Service Award recognizes individuals for exceptional service to the Society. The three 2007 awardees have made outstanding contributions in a variety of areas.
Nancy L. Carlson, Technical Program Manager, Geological Society of America, is recognized for her outstanding support of technical program development at GSA meetings. For more than 17 years she has assisted individual geoscientists with abstract submissions and supported the Joint Technical Program Committee and Technical Program chairs in organizing and scheduling scientific sessions for GSA's annual meeting, Section meetings, and a variety of specialty meetings.
Yildirim Dilek, Professor of Geology, Miami University, has made significant contributions to GSA's thriving publications program as co-editor and editor of the Geological Society of America Bulletin, editor of three GSA books, and currently as Books Acquisition Editor. He has also served as president of the Society's International Division and organized numerous scientific meetings and symposia. Dilek holds a B.S. degree in geological engineering from the University of Istanbul, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in geology from the University of California-Davis.
Robert C. Thomas, Professor of Geology, University of Montana Western, is recognized for his contributions to GSA's education and public outreach efforts. Since 1995, he has led eight GeoVenture trips for the Society, providing scientists and non-scientists alike with enriching learning experiences related to fundamental earth processes. Thomas earned a B.A. degree in geology at Humboldt State University, an M.S. from the University of Montana, and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington.
