American Society for Microbiology honors Michael Bruce Zwick

Grant and Award Announcement

American Society for Microbiology

Washington, DC -- Sept. 13, 2007 -- One of the 2007 American Society for Microbiology (ASM) ICAAC Young Investigator Awards sponsored by Merck and Company, Inc., U.S. Human Health, will be presented to Michael Bruce Zwick, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Immunology, The Scripps Research Institute. Dr. Zwick is being honored for his research excellence in microbiology and infectious disease.

Dr. Zwick has distinguished himself in the field of HIV research through his rational approach to trying to solve the problems associated with an HIV vaccine. His method is based on gaining an understanding of the molecular details of the useful antibodies generated to date, and the sites on the virus that the antibodies target – a strategy that will be essential to designing improvements to any molecules used in an HIV-1 vaccine. He has published an extensive number of papers, four of which he was first author on while still a graduate student. He is currently supported by two NIH grants, and was honored with an Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation Scholarship Award in 2002-2003. Dr. Zwick has proven himself to be dedicated to this very important field, and is known for having opened new areas of investigation due to his research.
