HOBOKEN, N.J. -- Multimodal messaging, a core service within the delivery of healthcare, will be the topic of Stevens Institute of Technology's next healthcare roundtable, September 19, 2007 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Babbio Center. Roundtable participants will discuss the role of open source, IP-based PBX platforms such as Asterisk, within the telecommunications infrastructure of healthcare delivery as it pertains to security, stability, cost, and other related factors.
"The verbal correspondence between healthcare providers concerning a patient's medical information must be integrated within the electronic medical record, while assuring information security and privacy. Our research and development efforts are working towards an overall solution that meets these needs and more," said Dr. S. Vincent Grasso, surgeon, medical informaticist, Adjunct Professor at Stevens and the roundtable's coordinator.
Participants for the upcoming roundtable shared their views on this topic. Carmelo Garcia, MSIS, Director of Health and Human Services in Hoboken, N.J., said, "The integration of the telecom platform within the framework of other services would enhance one's ability to control and manage data flow, and thereby access overall security and audits." Alex Mendez, Director of Information Systems at the North Hudson Community Action Corporation, said, "There are significant challenges to overcome concerning the integration of open source and even proprietary PBX platforms with H323 and SIP systems. I am especially interested in how various operating systems such as a variant of Linux or Solaris would perform."
Considering the effects that new technology can have on patients, Christopher Irizarry, CEO of the North Hudson Community Action Corporation, stated, "In an effort to deliver the most value to our patients while consuming resources efficiently, we must explore new technologies and evaluate their potential impact within the delivery of healthcare. Regardless of how exciting or promising a new technology appears, the needs of our patients always come first." The forum will provide professionals from diverse backgrounds - including researchers, physicians, vendors, healthcare administrators and legislators - the opportunity to discuss obstacles and solutions to the telecommunications integration and management challenge as it pertains to the delivery of healthcare.
