Springer has signed an agreement with the International Sports Engineering Association (ISEA) to publish their journal Sports Engineering. Previously self-published by the ISEA, Sports Engineering is in its 10th year of publication. The first issue published by Springer will appear in January 2008.

Sports Engineering publishes original papers on the application of engineering and science to sport. The quarterly journal fills the niche area which lies between classical engineering and sports science and bridges the gap between the analysis of the equipment and of the athlete. Areas of interest include the mechanics and dynamics of sport, the analysis of movement, instrumentation, equipment design, surface interaction, materials and modelling. These topics may be applied to technology in almost any sport, for example the influence of shaft stiffness on puck speed in hockey, a new golf-swing robot with a skillful wrist turn or the quickest descent line during apline ski racing. The Editor-in-Chief is Martin Strangwood of the Department of Metallurgy and Materials at the School of Engineering, University of Birmingham, UK.

Mont Hubbard, President of the ISEA, said, “The members of the ISEA are pleased and excited that Springer will publish our journal, Sports Engineering. We look forward to the opportunity for a continued increase in the quantity and quality of its contributions and for the journal to play an even more prominent role in the development of the field.”

Anthony Doyle, Senior Editor, Engineering, at Springer, said, “As the leading journal exclusively focused on the engineering of sports applications, Sports Engineering is of particular interest to researchers in engineering, physics, mathematics and sports science. Previously published only in a print version, Springer will increase readership and visibility by making it available electronically as well.”

Fast publication in Online First™ will provide immediate access to new research results in Sports Engineering on www.springerlink.com, Springer’s online platform. In addition, all potential authors have the option, via the Springer Open Choice™ program, of publishing their articles using the open access publishing model. The first issue published by Springer will be available online as a free sample issue.
